History
Brave Software was founded in 2018 by Brendan Eich, the creator of JavaScript and co-founder of Mozilla Firefox. The company emerged from a desire to build a web browser that prioritized user privacy, contrasting with widely used browsers that rely on tracking-based advertising. Brave’s initial release focused on blocking third-party ads and trackers by default, along with built-in ad and token-based rewards for users through its Brave Rewards system.
In its early years, Brave expanded its ecosystem to include a privacy-centric search engine, powered by an independent index to reduce data collection compared to industry giants like Google. The company also introduced the Basic Attention Token (BAT), a cryptocurrency designed to facilitate direct transactions between users and content creators, bypassing traditional ad intermediaries. Funding played a key role in Brave’s growth, with significant investments from major crypto-focused venture capital firms and individual contributions from Eich and early adopters. By mitigating reliance on third-party ad networks, Brave positioned itself as a competitor in the privacy-forward segment of the browser market, appealing to users frustrated with tracking and data surveillance.
